How to plant succulents

Of all the plants we can grow in a garden or a house, succulents are perhaps one of the most numerous and popular groups. This is because they are very beautiful plants from an aesthetic perspective, but also because they are among the best air cleaners (especially important in big city flats) and are quite easy to care for with best lawn tractor battery.

However, if you are considering how to plant succulents, it is important that you take into account a number of very important factors.

Types of succulents

Succulents are a variety of plants that are characterized by storing a lot of water inside. In this sense, they act just like cactus. However, succulent plants do not have leaves in the form of thorns like these, but they retain their leaves like other common plants, although, in this case, you will recognize them because they will appear to be swollen due to the storage of water.

There are many types of succulent plants and no doubt you must have seen them somewhere, probably in the form of ornamental plants indoors or some outdoors. They are characterized by growing in dry places, in some cases even in deserts. In this sense, they are usually found on rocks and in areas with poor soils. Some of the best known succulent plants are the jade plant, the aloe vera or the agave.

2 ways of planting succulents

There are two basic types for growing succulent plants.

How to plant succulents with seeds

On the one hand, seeds can be obtained directly from a garden shop. Once planted, these will grow like any other common plant, although it is important to note that succulents are characterized by a rather slow growth, so it may take some time before the new succulent looks like an adult plant.

How to plant succulents with leaves from adult plants

On the other hand, to grow succulent plants we can also make use of cuttings from other adult plants, which is usually much more efficient because they have a somewhat higher growth rate compared to newly germinated plants. To do this, just cut a branch with some leaves and, before planting it in a new pot or soil, we will place it for some time in a container with water. This will allow the plant to develop some roots in the submerged area, which will allow it to hold on tighter when transplanted.

Generally, leaving the cuttings in water for a week will be more than enough time. Keep in mind that succulent plants do not tolerate moisture well, so if left for a long time, even though it will develop roots, it is likely that they will rot. Therefore, it is best to leave the cuttings in water for a few days and, as soon as the roots have started to develop, transplant them to the soil and water them abundantly just after transplanting.

Care of the succulents

To take care of your succulent plant, you should keep the following in mind.

How often do you water succulents?
One of the most important things to consider when caring for succulent plants is that they do not tolerate excess water well. Therefore, although it is important that we water them when the soil is dry, we must ensure that the soil is dry before the next watering, as well as prevent water from accumulating in the bottom plate of this type of plant.

Soil for planting succulents

On the other hand, they are also plants that are adapted to rather sandy and poor soils. In part, this also influences the humidity of the soil itself. In fact, the sandier and poorer the soil, the better the drainage will be, which will prevent waterlogging.

In this sense, the best thing we can do is to place our succulent plant in a soil that is not the usual one for indoor plants and, if we do so, mix the previous substrate with sand to provide better drainage and reduce excess nutrients.

Succulents: indoor or outdoor?

Finally, we must also take into account that succulent plants need well ventilated spaces with abundant light. This does not mean that we should put them in direct sunlight, especially if they are small plants located in pots, as they could get burned.

But it is important that succulents have good access to indirect light and that they are kept in dry, well-ventilated places. In this sense, a bath would not be a good place for a plant of these characteristics, even though it is an ornamental element used quite frequently in these rooms.
